Liverpool FC Unveils Diogo Jota Memorial Sculpture Plans at Anfield

Liverpool Football Club has announced plans to erect a memorial sculpture at Anfield dedicated to Diogo Jota, following the tragic death of the player and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain earlier this month. The club will also feature a 'Forever 20' emblem on the players' shirts and jackets during the upcoming 2025-26 season. This initiative aims to honor Jota's significant contributions to the club and provide a lasting tribute to his legacy.
The decision to create a memorial sculpture follows an outpouring of grief from fans, with thousands of tributes, including flowers, shirts, and artwork, laid outside Anfield in remembrance of the forward, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool FC. These items have been collected and preserved by the club's staff, with floral tributes being composted to nourish flower beds across the club's various sites. The remaining artifacts will be recycled by a specialized company to aid in the creation of the memorial sculpture, although the specific design remains unconfirmed. A No. 20 jersey, representing Jota's number, is among the options being considered.
In the meantime, Liverpool FC has established a temporary reflection area outside Anfield's Main Stand, allowing supporters to continue paying their respects. During the pre-season tour of Asia, players will don a specially designed 'Diogo J 20' patch on their shirts, and floral tributes will be paid before kick-off at friendly matches in Hong Kong, Yokohama, and Anfield.
The 'Forever 20' emblem will be incorporated into the players' new kit, set to debut following the club's switch from Nike to Adidas on August 1, 2025. Supporters wishing to honor Jota can also have 'Diogo J 20' printed on the back of their shirts at club shops or through the official online store, with profits benefiting the Liverpool FC Foundation.
A major commemoration event, including a special fan mosaic and a minute of silence, is planned for the first Premier League match of the season against Bournemouth at Anfield on August 15, 2025. Additionally, Liverpool FC has announced the permanent retirement of the No. 20 shirt across all club levels in memory of Jota, solidifying his legacy within the team.
This memorial initiative highlights the club's commitment to honoring players who have made significant contributions, while also fostering a sense of community among fans during this difficult time. The LFC Foundation will further launch a grassroots football program in Jota's name, ensuring that his impact extends beyond the pitch and into future generations of players. As Liverpool FC navigates the upcoming season, the memory of Diogo Jota will remain a poignant reminder of the legacy that sports figures can leave behind, both on and off the field.
