Mirra Andreeva Takes on Coaching Role for Conchita Martinez at Wimbledon

In a captivating display of sportsmanship and camaraderie, 18-year-old tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva stepped into an unexpected role at the Wimbledon legends event by coaching her mentor, Conchita Martinez. The event, held at the prestigious All England Club, showcased a unique twist where the student became the teacher, albeit in an enthusiastic and supportive capacity.
Andreeva, currently ranked World No. 7, demonstrated her playful spirit during the mixed doubles match, which took place on July 9, 2025. Known for their light-hearted rapport, Andreeva had hinted at her intentions to step up as a cheerleader for Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion, a day prior to the event. “I’m already thinking about a poster that I will make,” Andreeva excitedly shared with the press. “I will come to the court and support and, obviously, coach. That’s my time to get back at her.”
Making good on her promise, Andreeva adorned herself with a handmade sign that read “Let’s go! Señorita Topspin,” and “You are golden,” decorated with sparkles and playful illustrations, reflecting their shared passion for tennis and fun. Notably, the sign featured images of strawberries and two Uno cards, a nod to their favorite game during travels on the tennis circuit. She completed her look with a Wimbledon-themed Panama hat, further embodying the spirit of the event.
Throughout the match, Andreeva was a vocal supporter, encouraging Martinez with chants of “You'd better win this game!” and “Keep it up!” Unfortunately, despite her spirited efforts, Martinez and her partner, former ATP No. 4 Greg Rusedski, were defeated with a score of 7-6(5), 6-3 by opponents Katie O'Brien and Thomas Johansson.
Andreeva’s performance at Wimbledon has been noteworthy, as she reached her first quarterfinal at this prestigious tournament. With aspirations to mirror her coach's success and claim her first Grand Slam title, she expressed gratitude for her partnership with Martinez. “I feel like now having her in my box, especially during this tournament, is also super special because she can give me and share with me so much experience,” Andreeva remarked during a press conference. “She understands me, and I understand what she wants from me.”
This partnership has proven to be beneficial for Andreeva, as she has already secured two titles at WTA 1000-level tournaments this season. As she prepares to face Belinda Bencic on Centre Court for a chance at her second career major semifinal, the influence of Martinez, both as a coach and mentor, remains a pivotal element of her journey in professional tennis.
The camaraderie displayed between Andreeva and Martinez exemplifies the supportive environment that can flourish within sports, highlighting the importance of mentorship and the unique relationships that develop between coaches and athletes. As the Wimbledon fortnight progresses, Andreeva’s determination and the guidance of her coach may lead to even greater achievements on the tennis court.
