Sara Fernández Celebrates 200 Rally Starts at ERC in Italy

Sara Fernández, a trailblazing figure in motorsport, commemorated her 200th competitive start during the Rally di Roma Capitale, marking a significant milestone in her career as the first female to win the FIA European Rally Championship for Co-Drivers. Fernández, who partnered with Efrén Llarena to secure a commendable seventh place in the event, has become a prominent name in rally racing since her debut in 2005.
Motorsport has been a family affair for Fernández, whose father was a motocross rider. She emphasized that her journey began as a passion rather than a professional pursuit, stating, “I started rallies as a hobby, never to be a professional co-driver. But I am so happy to be here and to win titles.” In 2021, she clinched her first ERC Co-Drivers' title and has continued to make strides in her career, including winning the ERC3 and ERC1 titles.
The significance of the European Rally Championship (ERC) for emerging drivers was highlighted by Fernández, who noted, “Winning the Spanish Junior title gave us the possibility to compete in the ERC with Rallye Team Spain... it’s very nice to compete with other young drivers.” As motorsport evolves, the ERC has become a vital platform for young talents, allowing them to gain invaluable experience in a competitive environment.
When not competing, Fernández engages in her family’s dairy farming business in northern Spain, where she oversees a herd of 200 cows. This commitment to agriculture underscores her belief in having a balanced life, stating, “It’s good for the future to have a plan B because rallies is a good job but I prefer to have other options.” Fernández has also recently founded Llarena Racing, aiming to support emerging drivers with their experiences in international championships.
Her admiration for fellow co-driver Carlos del Barrio, whom she considers a mentor, reflects her dedication to the sport and the importance of camaraderie in racing. “He’s the best co-driver, and I’m very lucky because he’s also my friend,” Fernández remarked, showcasing the collaborative spirit prevalent in the rally community.
As she looks to the future, Fernández acknowledged the challenges of reaching 400 competitive starts but remains optimistic about her journey in motorsport. “I would like, of course, but we will see in the future,” she concluded, embodying the resilience and passion that defines her career.
The Rally di Roma Capitale serves not only as a personal milestone for Fernández but also as a reminder of the evolving landscape of the ERC, which continues to provide a nurturing ground for new talent in the world of rally racing.
