Selwyn Cobbo Signs One-Year Deal with Dolphins for NRL 2026 Season

In a significant move for the National Rugby League (NRL), Queensland Origin and Test player Selwyn Cobbo has officially signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins for the 2026 season, as announced on June 27, 2025. This acquisition is expected to bolster the Dolphins' backline, adding firepower to an already strong roster.
Cobbo, who hails from Cherbourg, located just a short distance from the Dolphins’ training base north of Brisbane, expressed enthusiasm about the transition. He has made a name for himself in the league, having played six games for Queensland in the State of Origin series and 80 NRL matches for the Brisbane Broncos. Additionally, Cobbo made his international Test debut for Australia against Samoa in 2023 and has represented the Prime Minister’s XIII team against Papua New Guinea, alongside twice playing for the Indigenous All Stars team.
The Dolphins, under the leadership of Head Coach Kristian Woolf, are building a competitive team aimed at becoming a top contender in the NRL. Dolphins CEO Terry Reader highlighted Cobbo's potential, stating, "Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already. But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey."
Reader’s comments reflect the franchise's strategic vision to enhance their roster depth while capitalizing on local talent. The Dolphins already have a strong backline featuring players like English international Herbie Farnworth, Kangaroo Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Kiwi Test player Jamayne Isaako, Jake Averillo, and Jack Bostock. This combination is further strengthened by experienced halves, including Kiwi international Kodi Nikorima and young Tongan player Isaiya Katoa.
Cobbo is set to join the team as they begin their pre-season training in November 2025. His addition is not only a tactical move but also a nod to the Dolphins’ commitment to fostering local talent and building a culturally rich team atmosphere. The franchise has a history of acknowledging and respecting the Indigenous heritage of the area, emphasizing their connection to the land and the community.
As the NRL landscape evolves, the Dolphins’ strategy of integrating emerging talent like Cobbo could prove pivotal in their quest for success in the upcoming seasons. The excitement surrounding Cobbo's signing is palpable, as fans and analysts alike anticipate the impact he will have on the team's performance and overall league dynamics in 2026.
