World Rugby Disciplinary Outcomes for U20 Championship Players Announced

In a recent disciplinary update, World Rugby announced the outcomes of sanctions imposed on players following incidents during the final match day of the World Rugby U20 Championship 2025 held in Italy. The Independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) convened to evaluate the conduct of Evan Minto from Wales, Sika Uamaki Pole from New Zealand, Daniel Chico-Ayo from Spain, and Pedro Rubiolo from Argentina, all of whom faced red cards for various infractions.

Evan Minto, who received a red card due to two yellow cards in the match against Italy on July 19, 2025, has been issued a warning after the FPRC determined that a mere sending-off was adequate. According to Philippe Cavalieros, the committee chair, Minto's yellow cards were awarded for technical offences, and the warning has been accepted, allowing him to return to play immediately.

Conversely, Sika Uamaki Pole of New Zealand was handed a three-match suspension, reduced to two matches contingent upon successful completion of the Coaching Intervention Programme. This decision followed his red card for a dangerous tackle during the match against South Africa on the same day. "I acknowledge my actions were reckless, although I do not believe they warranted a red card," Uamaki Pole stated, reflecting on the committee's application of World Rugby’s mandatory mid-range entry point due to head contact.

Similarly, Daniel Chico-Ayo from Spain received a three-match suspension, also reduced to two with program completion, for a dangerous clearout during Spain's clash against Ireland. Chico-Ayo accepted that his conduct was reckless but insisted it was not deliberate. His suspension will be applied to upcoming fixtures once they are finalized.

In a separate matter, Pedro Rubiolo from Argentina is facing a more severe outcome. His case will be addressed by a Disciplinary Committee after he received a red card in the July International match against Uruguay for a dangerous clearout. The Disciplinary hearing is scheduled for July 22, 2025.

The FPRC operates without the attendance of the players or their representatives, although written submissions can be made for consideration. This expedited off-field sanction process is part of an effort to maintain player safety and uphold the integrity of the game. The committee’s ability to impose sanctions includes issuing warnings, proposing sanctions based on the severity of infractions, and referring cases for full hearings if necessary.

World Rugby continues its commitment to player welfare and the enforcement of disciplinary regulations to ensure a safe competitive environment in rugby. The outcomes of these cases underscore the organization’s dedication to addressing foul play while providing pathways for player education and rehabilitation through programs such as the Coaching Intervention Programme.
