Wrexham Secures Lewis O'Brien Transfer from Nottingham Forest

Wrexham AFC has officially announced the signing of midfielder Lewis O'Brien from Premier League side Nottingham Forest, bolstering their squad ahead of their inaugural season back in the Championship since 1981. The club confirmed the transfer on Thursday, July 24, 2025, stating that O'Brien has signed a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
O'Brien, 26, joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 but struggled to secure a regular first-team spot, making only 13 appearances in the Premier League. His recent career has included multiple loan spells with clubs such as D.C. United and Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer (MLS), as well as Championship teams Middlesbrough and Swansea City. "I'm absolutely buzzing. It's been a long time coming, but to be here is great," O'Brien expressed in an official statement. He further remarked, "The last couple of years has been a whirlwind for me and my family, but to sign a long-term contract and find somewhere I can call home is a great feeling."
The former Forest player highlighted Wrexham's ambition as a key factor in his decision to join the club. "After speaking to everyone here, it's a Club with a lot of ambition. I want to be part of that journey and take Wrexham to where they want to be," he added. O'Brien's extensive experience in the Championship, where he has made 162 appearances, is expected to significantly contribute to Wrexham's campaign as they aim to solidify their position in England's second tier of football following three consecutive promotions.
Wrexham Manager Phil Parkinson expressed his enthusiasm about the new signing, stating, "I'm delighted to welcome Lewis to the Club. He's a player with a lot of experience at this level and will be a great addition to the group. We're looking forward to working with him."
Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has been active in the transfer market this summer. In addition to O'Brien, the club has secured New Zealand international defender Liberato Cacace from Italian side Empoli and attacking midfielder Josh Windass on a free transfer after his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.
This strategic recruitment reflects Wrexham's ambition to enhance their competitiveness in the Championship, a goal supported by their significant financial backing. As the club prepares for its new season, the addition of experienced players like O'Brien and Cacace could prove vital in navigating the challenges of higher-tier football. Wrexham's journey back to the Championship is not just a sporting feat but also a testament to the club's resurgence under its current ownership, which has attracted global attention and support since their acquisition in 2020.
