BMW Marks 50 Years of 3 Series with Limited Edition Sedan

BMW is commemorating the 50th anniversary of its iconic 3 Series with the launch of a special six-cylinder sedan, the 50 Jahre Edition, priced at $127,600 AUD before on-road costs. This exclusive model, based on the M340i xDrive, will see only 50 units made available in Australia, with initial deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The BMW 3 Series has been a cornerstone of the brand since its introduction in 1975 as a replacement for the 2002 series. According to BMW Australia's Managing Director, Mr. Mark Werner, the 3 Series has been the highest-selling model in Australia since records were established, with over 191,000 registrations recorded. The special edition's production is a nod to the model's enduring popularity and its significant impact on BMW's lineup.
The 50 Jahre Edition features unique cosmetic touches tailored for the Australian and New Zealand markets, including BMW Individual Anthracite Metallic paint and a limited-edition build plate on the center console. The vehicle is equipped with 19-inch jet black M light alloy wheels, carbon-fiber interior trim, and M Sport Package Pro, which includes high-gloss M sport brakes in red. The rear spoiler and M seat belts further enhance its sporty aesthetic.
Under the hood, the M340i xDrive is powered by a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, delivering an impressive 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque. The vehicle is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, achieving a remarkable 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.4 seconds. Standard features include an adaptive M suspension, M sport differential, adaptive LED headlights, a sunroof, and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with BMW Operating System 8.5.
The 3 Series has undergone multiple transformations over the decades. The original E21 model debuted as a two-door sedan, paving the way for the four-door E30 in 1983, which introduced features such as all-wheel drive and the first M3 variant. The current G20 generation, now in its seventh iteration, has further expanded options, including plug-in hybrid variants and electric models, as seen with the upcoming eighth-generation lineup expected to feature an electric version based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.
As the automotive industry shifts towards sustainability, BMW is strategically positioning the 3 Series to cater to evolving consumer preferences. This limited edition serves not only as a celebration of the model's legacy but also as an indicator of the brand's commitment to innovation and performance.
In summary, the BMW 3 Series 50 Jahre Edition reflects the brand's rich heritage while looking forward to future developments in electrification and luxury performance. With its blend of exclusive features and cutting-edge technology, it stands as a testament to BMW's enduring legacy in the luxury automotive market.
