Cauvery Madhavan's 'The Inheritance': A Journey of Resilience

Cauvery Madhavan, an acclaimed author, shared her transformative journey following a life-threatening stroke she suffered at the age of 47. In her latest book, 'The Inheritance', she recounts the harrowing experience and the changes it inspired in her life. Madhavan will be attending the West Cork Literary Festival in Bantry Bookshop on July 12, 2025, to discuss her book and the lessons learned from her ordeal.

The incident occurred 16 years ago while Madhavan and her husband, Prakash, were staying at their home in Glengarriff, County Cork. On a seemingly ordinary Thursday morning, Madhavan was struck by a stroke, which left her speechless and paralyzed on her right side. Prakash, a vascular surgeon, recognized the signs immediately and managed to call for help despite the limited mobile coverage in the area.

Describing the moment of her stroke, Madhavan recalled, "I was literally having zero symptoms of anything untoward. It was pure chance I wasn’t alone." As she lay incapacitated, her husband managed to alert neighbors and prepare for her transportation to the hospital. The urgency was exacerbated by the terrain's inaccessibility, and the couple's isolation heightened the gravity of the situation.

Upon reaching Cork University Hospital (CUH), Madhavan experienced a miraculous recovery, regaining her speech and mobility. Medical professionals later identified that a tear in her carotid artery had caused the initial stroke, while a second stroke was triggered by a separate piece that lodged in a smaller artery. "It’s quite a miraculous thing," Madhavan stated, reflecting on the serendipity of her recovery.

Following her strokes, Madhavan was prescribed aspirin to manage her blood pressure, which had gone undiagnosed prior to the incident. The experience prompted her to make extensive lifestyle changes, including significant dietary modifications and increased physical activity. She noted, "I literally turned my life around health-wise. I became obsessive about my salt intake. I didn’t cut out anything but I went to less than half of the portions I had been eating."

Despite the physical recovery, Madhavan faced psychological hurdles, particularly the fear of experiencing another stroke. She described her anxiety: "For about a year, I got tingling in my arms and fingertips, 15, 20 times a day. It frightened me — it was the sensation I’d had when I got the second stroke."

With support from her husband, who provided grounded advice amidst her fears, she began to reclaim her life. "I still consider it my lucky stroke. I could have had a terrible outcome. Instead, I got a warning," she explained. This second chance led Madhavan to embrace life more fully; she undertook challenges like walking the Camino de Santiago and reaching Everest Base Camp, activities she had never previously attempted.

Madhavan's narrative emphasizes resilience and the power of perspective. She advocates for living life to the fullest, stating, "I never say no to anything now. It’s not that I have no fear — just I got a second chance and I’m not going to waste it." Her story not only serves as a personal testament but also resonates with broader themes of health, recovery, and the importance of support systems.

As she prepares for her appearance at the West Cork Literary Festival, her insights may inspire many to reflect on their own lives and the potential for change sparked by unexpected challenges. 'The Inheritance' is not just a memoir; it is a reflection on life, resilience, and the journeys we undertake in the face of adversity.
