MST Launches Affordable Mk1 Sports Escort Restomod for Enthusiasts

In a notable development in the automotive restoration and remanufacturing sector, Britain's MST has unveiled its latest offering, the Mk1 Sports Escort, a more budget-friendly addition to its roster of remanufactured vehicles. This model is inspired by Ford's iconic early competition cars, such as the RS1600 and Mexico, which historically excelled in circuit racing and rallying. The Mk1 Sports aims to deliver a return to the essence of driving by providing a straightforward, analogue experience at a competitive price point.

Priced at £74,500 (approximately $123,000), the Mk1 Sports stands out in the current market of restomods, where prices can often soar well above this benchmark. According to MST's official statement, this vehicle is not merely a restomod; it is constructed entirely from new components and shells, allowing it to be registered as a new car. The Mk1 Sports will be available in both left-hand and right-hand drive configurations, catering to various markets.

The design of the Mk1 Sports is characterized by its narrower track and more understated appearance compared to other models produced by MST. While the standard color is Frozen White, customers can choose from a selection of period-appropriate 1970s colors, as well as optional side stripes and additional Cibie spotlamps to enhance the aesthetic appeal.

From a technical standpoint, the Mk1 Sports features adjustable 'fast road' suspension, employing McPherson struts in the front and leaf springs at the rear—a setup designed to provide an engaging driving experience. The vehicle is equipped with 13-inch four-spoke alloy wheels as standard, with Minilite wheels available as an alternative. Inside, retro sports seats add to the nostalgic feel, and an optional rear bench seat allows for family outings.

Under the bonnet, the Mk1 Sports is powered by a normally aspirated two-liter, four-cylinder, twin-cam 16-valve engine featuring Jenvey throttle bodies, delivering an output of 183 horsepower. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a close-ratio five-speed H-pattern manual gearbox. Braking is facilitated by a comprehensive disc system with four-piston calipers, ensuring adequate stopping power.

Henry Catchpole, a renowned automotive journalist, lauded the Mk1 Sports after a test drive, stating that he felt "on cloud nine". Despite its reduced power and narrower body, he confidently rated the driving experience as at least a seven out of ten. However, potential buyers should act quickly, as MST has announced that only 25 units of the Mk1 Sports will be produced, with production scheduled to commence in 2026.
