Rare Ex-Ralph Lauren Ferrari F50 Set to Auction for $7.5 Million

In a significant event for automotive enthusiasts and collectors, a rare ex-Ralph Lauren Ferrari F50 is set to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s during the prestigious Monterey Car Week in California, scheduled for mid-August 2025. This particular F50, one of only two U.S.-specification models painted in a striking ‘Giallo Modena’ yellow, carries an estimated auction price between $6.5 million and $7.5 million.

The Ferrari F50, a two-seat supercar notable for its Formula One-derived V12 engine and removable hard-top roof, was produced in a limited run of just 349 units to commemorate Ferrari's 50th anniversary. Of these, only 31 were painted in yellow, with this specific car being one of the two built to meet U.S. specifications. Ralph Lauren, the renowned American fashion designer, initially acquired the vehicle in 1995. After owning it for eight years, he sold it in 2003, and it has remained privately held since then.

The auction marks a rare opportunity to purchase a vehicle from Lauren's extensive and world-famous car collection, as he is known for rarely parting with his cherished automobiles. According to RM Sotheby’s, the F50 has been in impeccable condition, having accumulated fewer than 5,400 miles since its purchase. The auction house highlights that the car has not been publicly displayed since 2009, which adds to its allure.

The Ferrari F50 has seen a surge in value over the past decade. Initially undervalued compared to its predecessor, the F40, the market for the F50 has transformed, with auction prices now regularly exceeding the $5 million mark. For context, a red F50 with only 1,000 miles sold for $5,532,500 in February 2025, while another fetched $5,505,500 in the summer of 2024.

The significance of this auction is underscored by the rarity of such cars coming to market, particularly those with notable provenance. As noted by RM Sotheby’s, “It is very rare that Mr. Lauren has parted with a car once acquired, making the opportunity to purchase a vehicle with his provenance quite a rarity.”

The vehicle’s current owners, a couple who are dedicated Ferrari enthusiasts, have described the F50 as the centerpiece of their collection. They have participated in Ferrari Challenge race events, showcasing their commitment to the brand.

The Ferrari F50 is supported by documentation that confirms its authenticity, having received Ferrari Classiche Certification, which was recently reviewed and renewed in 2024. This certification ensures that all components of the vehicle remain original and exactly as they should be, further enhancing its appeal to potential buyers.

The upcoming auction not only represents a rare chance to acquire a piece of automotive history but also reflects the growing appreciation for classic supercars, particularly those with unique features and esteemed ownership. As such, this event is anticipated to attract significant attention from collectors and investors alike, eager to own a piece of Ferrari's illustrious legacy.
