Rising Demand for Talent in India's Gaming Industry Amid AAA Game Development

As Indian gaming studios intensify their efforts to create ambitious, homegrown intellectual properties (IPs) characterized by larger budgets, enhanced visuals, and intricate gameplay, the competition for specialized talent is becoming increasingly fierce. According to TeamLease Digital, a staffing firm, the Indian gaming industry currently faces a talent shortage with an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 open positions across various experience levels as of July 2025.
The demand for skilled professionals, particularly in roles such as gameplay engineers, backend developers, principal animators, 3D artists, and environment designers, has surged. This follows a substantial growth trajectory for the industry, which has expanded its workforce to approximately 130,000 employees, up from 50,000 in 2022.
Neeti Sharma, Chief Executive of TeamLease Digital, noted, "The Indian gaming industry is hiring a combination of technical and creative skill sets, with key roles in demand including game developers skilled in Unity or Unreal platforms, backend engineers for multiplayer games, and various artistic roles."
Bengaluru-based LightFury Games, founded by Anurag Banerjee, has begun recruiting across multiple disciplines including animation, game art, backend infrastructure, and gameplay engineering. Banerjee emphasized the importance of nurturing talent to develop AAA titles, which refer to high-profile video games with substantial development budgets often reaching hundreds of millions of dollars. LightFury recently raised $8.5 million in funding and is working on a big-budget AAA game, E-Cricket, slated for release in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2026.
Similarly, Pune-based SuperGaming is expanding its team for its flagship Indus Battle Royale game. CEO Roby John highlighted the challenge of finding talent motivated to create high-quality, technically complex games, stating, "A good gaming studio typically requires 10 years to become successful, and assembling the right teams for various aspects of game development is complex."
The trend of reverse brain drain, where experienced talent returns to India from abroad, is gaining momentum, as evidenced by SuperGaming's hiring of over 25 professionals from global studios like Ubisoft. The company is also employing international staff through its Singapore-based entity, SuperGaming Pte Ltd, to fill specific talent gaps.
However, the journey to scale a game studio remains fraught with challenges, particularly in hiring top-tier talent with experience in console or PC gaming. Anuj Tandon, a partner at Bitkraft Ventures, noted that while India has abundant talent for casual games, there is a noticeable lack of experience in mid-core and AAA titles.
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into game development processes is emerging as a critical factor in addressing these challenges. AI is being leveraged to streamline development timelines, reduce costs, and enhance gameplay by creating smarter non-player characters (NPCs) and more dynamic environments. Tandon remarked, "If you're not using AI, you're living under a rock. It has impacted game development timelines and efficiency, making studios more productive without replacing human talent."
Despite the efficiencies gained through AI, industry leaders assert that the essence of game development relies on creativity and collaboration among skilled developers. Avichal Singh, co-founder of Nodding Heads Games, stated, "AI can expedite processes and validate ideas, but the foundational skills necessary to create exceptional games remain unchanged."
With rising investor interest in gaming startups, the increasing prevalence of high-end mobile-first formats, and improved access to global development tools and cloud infrastructure, the Indian gaming industry is at a pivotal juncture. The future looks promising, yet scaling studios and producing AAA titles will require sustained investment, strategic hiring, and a focus on nurturing local talent to meet evolving industry demands.
