Sony Electronics Unveils RX1R III: Premium Compact Camera with AI Features

Sony Electronics Inc. has officially launched the RX1R III, the latest iteration in its RX1R series of premium compact cameras, on July 15, 2025, in San Diego, California. This flagship model boasts a 61-megapixel full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor and an advanced BIONZ XR™ image processing engine, designed for discerning photographers seeking high-quality image capture in a compact format.
The RX1R III's introduction is significant as it showcases Sony’s commitment to innovation in imaging technology, combining high-resolution capabilities with user-friendly features. According to Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, “The RX1R III combines Sony's design savvy with the latest innovations in imaging technology to produce a new flagship in our RX1R camera series that offers uncompromising full-frame quality in a premium compact camera body.” This statement underscores the company's focus on delivering cutting-edge solutions to professional photographers and enthusiasts alike.
Historically, the RX1 series has been well-received since its inception, with previous models noted for their portability and image quality. The RX1R III builds on this legacy by integrating AI-driven real-time recognition auto-focus, a feature previously available in Sony's high-end Alpha™ camera models. This system employs 693 phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 78% of the image area, enhancing the camera's capability to track moving subjects, including human faces and eyes, even when partially obscured.
In terms of design, the RX1R III is constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, ensuring both durability and a premium feel. The camera features a sleek flat design with embedded controls for efficient usability. Additionally, an electronic viewfinder with approximately 2.36 million-dot resolution offers high contrast and clarity for composing shots. The device supports up to 300 still images per charge, utilizing the NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, and incorporates a USB Type-C port for rapid charging and external power options, catering to the demands of active photographers.
The RX1R III is not only focused on performance but also on delivering creative freedom. With features like the Step Crop Shooting function, users can switch between focal lengths of 35 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm, providing versatility in various shooting scenarios. The camera also includes twelve built-in Creative Looks, allowing users to apply personalized aesthetics to both still images and videos.
Sony’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the RX1R III’s production, aligning with the company's 'Road to Zero' initiative aimed at achieving a zero environmental footprint by 2050. Manufacturing facilities for the RX1R III are powered by 100% renewable energy, and the packaging utilizes eco-friendly materials, demonstrating a responsible approach to consumer electronics.
The RX1R III is set to retail for approximately $5,099.99 USD and will be available through Sony and authorized dealers across North America starting July 2025. Optional accessories, including a dedicated thumb grip and protective body case, will also be available, enhancing the user experience while maintaining the camera's elegance.
As the photography market continues to evolve, the RX1R III represents a significant step forward in compact camera technology, merging high-end performance with advanced features tailored for modern photographers. With its anticipated release, Sony Electronics aims to inspire creativity and elevate the standards of compact photography.
