Steyn City Launches Saxon Spa: A New Era in Wellness Investment

In a significant development for South Africa's wellness tourism sector, the prestigious Steyn City lifestyle estate, located in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, has announced the opening of a new Saxon Spa. This spa, measuring 1,400 square meters and designed by the acclaimed Design Collective team, represents an investment of approximately R56 million (US$3.2 million) and aims to enhance the region's reputation as a wellness destination. The Saxon Spa, which opened its doors in October 2024, will cater to Steyn City residents, hotel guests, and day visitors, offering a comprehensive range of wellness treatments that emphasize holistic health and relaxation.
Steyn City is part of a legacy project developed by the late billionaire Douw Steyn, encompassing an expansive multi-billion rand estate that features an 18-hole championship golf course and a 300-meter lagoon pool, among other luxurious amenities. According to Steven Louw, CEO of Steyn City Properties, the estate is still under construction and will eventually house 760 residences by the fourth quarter of 2026, ensuring the area continues to thrive as a premier lifestyle destination.
The Saxon Spa's opening signifies a proud moment for Tanya Lopes, the spa manager, who expressed her enthusiasm for expanding the renowned Saxon Spa experience to a new market. The spa's design incorporates natural elements and local craftsmanship, providing a tranquil atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. Notably, each treatment room features chandeliers made from recycled glass by local artist Stephen Pikus, emphasizing the spa's commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
Among the numerous treatments available, the Soul by Saxon Signature Journey stands out. This 95-minute experience utilizes the Saxon Spa's exclusive product range and includes exfoliation with apricot kernel and rooibos leaves, followed by a nourishing application of shea butter and moringa oil. A deep tissue massage concludes the treatment, promoting overall wellness.
Furthermore, the spa is set to introduce vibracoustic wellness journeys, utilizing technology from the Gharieni Group to enhance the therapeutic experience. Lopes noted that this innovative offering is designed to help clients improve sleep quality and reduce stress levels, thereby addressing common health concerns faced by many individuals today.
As Steyn City continues to develop its extensive facilities, which include a clubhouse gym, padel courts, and a 50-kilometer mountain bike trail, the addition of Saxon Spa is expected to draw an increasing number of visitors to the area. With its commitment to holistic health and luxury, Steyn City is poised to become a leading player in the wellness tourism market in South Africa, catering to a growing demand for high-quality wellness experiences.
The integration of the Saxon Spa into the Steyn City estate reflects broader trends in the wellness industry, where there is an increasing focus on holistic and integrative approaches to health. As global interest in wellness tourism escalates, Steyn City is strategically positioned to attract both local and international clientele seeking comprehensive wellness solutions.
