The study, published on the preprint server arXiv on July 16, 2025, analyzed over 360,000 YouTube videos and 770,000 podcast episodes released before and after the launch of ChatGPT, uncovering a significant shift in the language used by humans in various communications.

The research indicates that individuals are increasingly adopting vocabulary and speech patterns reminiscent of those employed by AI. Terms such as ‘meticulous,’ ‘boast,’ and ‘realm’ have seen a marked increase in usage, as noted by the researchers. Co-author Hiromu Yakura described the emergence of these terms as a linguistic watermark of AI’s influence. He stated, “We detect a measurable and abrupt increase in the use of words preferentially generated by ChatGPT.” This phenomenon points to what the researchers term a “closed cultural feedback loop,” where the interaction between humans and machines is reshaping human communication.

The implications of this study are profound, raising questions about the long-term effects of AI on language and human interaction. Levin Brinkmann, another co-author of the study, emphasized that while it is natural for humans to imitate one another, the current trend of mimicking machines represents a significant cultural shift. The researchers argue that this influence extends beyond vocabulary; they observed changes in sentence structure and tone, with humans tending to adopt longer, more formal sentences that exhibit less emotional resonance.

Concerns have been raised by experts regarding the potential loss of linguistic diversity and the risk of diminishing personal expression. Mor Naaman, a scholar at Cornell Tech, cautioned that reliance on AI-generated language could lead to a reduction in the authenticity and spontaneity of human communication. “Instead of articulating our own thoughts,” Naaman warned, “we articulate whatever AI helps us to articulate, leading us to be more persuaded by the AI than by our own feelings.”

The study comes at a time when AI technology is becoming increasingly integrated into daily life, affecting not only written communication but also spoken interactions. The researchers acknowledge that while AI can enhance communication efficiency and facilitate positive social exchanges, it also fosters a dependency that could undermine individual expression and creativity.

As AI continues to evolve, understanding its impact on human language and interactions will be crucial. The findings of this study suggest that individuals and society at large must navigate the delicate balance between leveraging AI for communication and maintaining the authenticity of human speech.
