Australian Army Tanks Finally Arrive in Ukraine After Delays

In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, approximately 40 Australian army tanks have arrived in Ukraine, marking the culmination of a lengthy nine-month wait for their delivery. This shipment aims to bolster Ukraine's defenses against the military aggression led by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Albanese government initially announced the provision of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in October 2024, but the transfer was delayed due to bureaucratic hurdles within the United States Congress, which required approval for the shipment of these American-made vehicles.

Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasized the tanks' importance, stating, "These tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion." Marles expressed satisfaction after meeting Australian Army personnel involved in the logistical efforts to deliver the tanks from Australia to Ukraine. He reiterated Australia's commitment to supporting Ukraine in its pursuit of a just and lasting peace.

The majority of the tanks have now been delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces, with a final batch expected to arrive in the coming months. Although the exact number of tanks delivered remains undisclosed, sources familiar with the situation indicated that around 40 have reached their destination. The total value of the tank support package is estimated at $245 million, contributing to Australia’s overall commitment to Ukraine, which now stands at $1.5 billion since the onset of the conflict.

The tanks were loaded onto a commercial vessel in Geelong, Australia, before being sent to Ukraine. Despite some military experts questioning the effectiveness of tanks in the current warfare landscape—where drones can easily target armored vehicles—Ukrainian officials have welcomed Australia's decision to provide this military aid. The M1A1 Abrams tanks, which weigh 63 tonnes each and are equipped with advanced cannons and machine guns, will see combat for the first time in Ukraine, following modifications made by Ukrainian technicians to enhance their resilience against drone strikes.

Australia's Defence Industry Minister Patrick Conroy remarked that these upgraded M1A1 Abrams tanks would deliver enhanced firepower and mobility to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, fulfilling a direct request from the Ukrainian government. He acknowledged previous technological restrictions that complicated the delivery process but assured that these would not hinder the tanks' deployment.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, had been vocal in his appeals for military assistance, underscoring the tanks' critical role in Ukraine's land defense. He stated, "If Australia makes them available to Ukraine, either directly or indirectly through the US, we will gladly accept them and put them to good use."

In addition to the tanks, Australia plans to send a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail aircraft to Europe in August to assist in international efforts supporting Ukraine. The military aid follows a historical context of fluctuating US military support in the region, particularly after the Trump administration briefly suspended aid before ramping up arms shipments.
