Lebanon Sentences Man to Death for Killing Irish Soldier on UN Mission

A Lebanese military tribunal has sentenced Mohammad Ayyad to death for the killing of Private Seán Rooney, a member of the Irish Defence Forces, during a United Nations peacekeeping mission. The incident occurred on December 14, 2022, when Rooney was traveling in an armored UN vehicle that came under fire in southern Lebanon, marking a tragic first for the Irish forces, as it was the first death of an Irish peacekeeper in over two decades.
According to a statement from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), six individuals were found guilty in connection with Rooney's death, while one person was acquitted. The verdict was delivered by Lebanon's permanent military court in Beirut, as reported by Irish broadcaster RTÉ.
Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin expressed relief at the conviction but voiced dissatisfaction regarding Ayyad's absence from the courtroom and the perceived leniency of sentences given to the other defendants. "Many will feel the sentences passed down on the other defendants are far too lenient," Martin remarked. He emphasized the honorable nature of peacekeeping missions and the need for accountability for those who harm peacekeepers in the line of duty.
Private Seán Rooney, aged 24, was described by Martin as a soldier of immense courage who prioritized the safety of others during his service. The Taoiseach extended his condolences to Rooney’s family, particularly his mother, Natasha, stating, "Sean was brave and diligent. My thoughts and prayers are with Natasha, his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time."
Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Simon Harris also welcomed the convictions but expressed disappointment with the lighter sentences. He highlighted the importance of justice for the family of Private Rooney and noted that he had previously raised concerns regarding the slow pace of the proceedings with Lebanese officials.
UNIFIL has welcomed the conclusion of the trial process and reiterated its commitment to justice for Private Rooney and his family. In a statement, UNIFIL extended their deepest condolences to Rooney's family and the Government of Ireland, underscoring the importance of honoring the sacrifice made by peacekeepers.
The case has drawn significant attention to the dangers faced by peacekeepers deployed in volatile regions and the complexities surrounding military justice in Lebanon. The Irish Government is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely, advocating for justice and accountability in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
As the international community reflects on the implications of this case, the continued presence of Irish peacekeepers in Lebanon raises questions about the safety and security measures in place for those serving in such high-risk environments. The Irish Defence Forces have a long-standing history of participation in peacekeeping missions, and the loss of Private Rooney serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by those in service to their country and the global community.
