Survivor Describes Ha Long Bay Tour Boat Capsizing Incident

On July 20, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, when the tour boat "Wonder Sea" capsized during a storm, leading to the deaths of at least 35 people and leaving four others missing. This popular tourist destination saw the unfortunate event unfold shortly after the boat set sail for a three-hour excursion, carrying 48 passengers and five crew members. According to survivor Dang Anh Tuan, a 36-year-old fire extinguisher salesman, the boat’s crew assured passengers that they were nearing their destination despite the inclement weather, which included heavy rain and strong winds.
Tuan recounted his harrowing escape, stating, "It rained for about 15 minutes, and then the boat started to shake vigorously. Water gushed in and I lost all orientation. I tried to breathe but more water came in. I took a deep breath, got rid of my life vest, and dove down. I saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out, escaping the boat, and then climbed on the overturned vessel to look for help."
Rescue operations led to the recovery of 11 survivors, but one later succumbed to injuries in a hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident, with the boat now being towed to a shipyard for examination. The Wonder Sea suffered extensive damage, including shattered windows and a compromised roof. Reports indicate that most of the deceased were tourists from Hanoi, with a significant number being children. Tuan was on a holiday trip with 11 university friends, only three of whom survived the incident. Tragically, nine of his companions lost their lives, including one man who was traveling with his wife and young child.
As search and rescue efforts continue, the national weather forecast warns of impending storms, specifically Storm Wipha, which is expected to affect northern Vietnam, including the Ha Long Bay region. This incident has raised concerns about safety protocols for tourist vessels operating in adverse weather conditions. According to Dr. Nguyen Van Hai, an expert in maritime safety at the Vietnam Maritime University, "This incident underscores the critical need for stricter regulations regarding weather assessments and vessel operations."
The Ha Long Bay capsizing incident has prompted discussions on marine safety regulations and the need for improved emergency preparedness for tour operators. As the investigation unfolds, authorities must ensure accountability and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
