Vehicle Collides with Crowd Outside Los Angeles Nightclub, Injuring 20

Early on Saturday, July 19, 2025, a vehicle struck a crowd waiting to enter the Vermont Hollywood nightclub along Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, resulting in injuries to at least 20 individuals, with three reported to be in critical condition. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. as patrons were lining up for a reggae and hip-hop event hosted by the venue from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

According to Capt. Adam Van Gerpen, a public information officer for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, the vehicle, identified as a Nissan Versa, not only collided with the group waiting to enter the nightclub but also impacted a nearby taco truck and a valet stand. Victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment, and there were varying reports on the exact number of injuries, with estimates ranging from 20 to 30. Notably, one individual was discovered with a gunshot wound, although further details regarding this injury have not been disclosed.

Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos as club-goers rushed to assist the injured before emergency responders arrived. Francisco Mendez, who arrived shortly after the incident, confirmed that his sister-in-law and her husband, who were operating a hot dog stand near the club, were among those injured in the collision. Mendez expressed concern over the safety of those who frequent the area, especially during busy nightlife hours.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has initiated an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet released information regarding the identity of the driver or the potential causes of the crash. The nightclub’s management did not respond to inquiries following the incident.

The Vermont Hollywood has previously hosted various events and has been a popular gathering spot in the East Hollywood area. However, this incident raises significant questions about public safety in nightlife districts, especially in light of the increasing incidents of vehicular violence. Dr. Katherine Ellis, a criminologist at the University of Southern California, noted, "This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures around popular nightlife venues. The intersection of entertainment and public safety must be prioritized."

In response to the incident, community leaders are calling for increased security measures and better traffic management in the vicinity of nightlife hotspots. Local councilman Eric Harris stated, "We must ensure that our streets are safe for everyone, especially those enjoying a night out. This tragic event highlights the vulnerabilities that exist in our nightlife districts."

As the investigation continues, officials are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The community remains shaken by the event, and discussions about safety protocols and preventive measures are expected to gain momentum in the coming days, as residents and local businesses seek to prevent such occurrences in the future.
