Brandt noted that despite this surge, Google has successfully decoupled energy growth from carbon emissions by integrating an additional 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy into the grid, showcasing a path forward for sustainable energy practices in the tech industry.

The AI Energy Council's discussions are critical as they assess how various sectors are likely to embrace AI technologies and the subsequent shifts in energy demand. Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, emphasized, "Giving our researchers and innovators access to the processing power they need will not only maintain our standing as the world’s third-biggest AI power but also position British expertise at the forefront of breakthroughs that will modernize public services and stimulate economic growth."

Furthermore, the council's focus on responsible energy sourcing aims to ensure that the anticipated growth in AI does not compromise the UK’s commitment to clean energy. With the government’s strategy to establish AI growth zones across the country, more than 400 gigawatts of additional capacity could potentially be unlocked from the grid connection queue, according to the Department for Science, Technology, and Innovation.
