Arkema Collaborates with Carbone 4 on Net Zero Initiative for Emission Reduction

Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has partnered with Carbone 4, a consultancy specializing in low-carbon strategies, to implement the Net Zero Initiative (NZI) methodology. This collaboration, which began in 2023, aims to assess and improve the environmental performance of Arkema's clients by measuring avoided carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The NZI methodology, developed in conjunction with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), provides a framework for companies to align their operations with global carbon neutrality objectives, enabling them to quantify the positive climate impacts of their innovative solutions.

The significance of this initiative lies in its comprehensive approach to calculating avoided emissions, offering a standardized method for stakeholders to collaboratively manage their climate action. According to Emmanuelle Bromet, Arkema’s Group Sustainable Development Manager, "The Avoided Emissions methodology allows us to evaluate the positive impact of our innovative solutions on the climate. It’s not just about offering solutions that emit fewer greenhouse gases than existing market alternatives; it’s about supporting our customers in their environmental transition by providing them with more responsible and effective solutions."

Since the inception of this partnership, Arkema has successfully applied the NZI methodology to several product lines, notably its Kercoat® products, which are designed to enhance the durability of returnable glass bottles. These ultra-fine protective coatings significantly increase the lifespan of the bottles, allowing for greater reuse. Arkema's assessments indicate that utilizing Kercoat® can lead to a reduction of up to 30% in CO₂ emissions compared to standard practices, equating to nearly 300,000 tons of CO₂ avoided across several hundred million bottles sold.

Furthermore, Arkema has extended its collaboration with Carbone 4 to evaluate the environmental impact of Cecabase® RT Bio 10, a groundbreaking road construction solution that incorporates a 56% bio-sourced content. This innovative product not only lowers the production temperature of asphalt mixes but also allows for the use of up to 50% recycled asphalt, thereby reducing energy consumption and emissions. Gilles Barreto, Arkema’s R&D Director for Surfactants, elaborated, "Cecabase RT Bio 10 can reduce CO₂ emissions from asphalt production by up to 30% compared to conventional methods, which do not utilize recycled materials."

The NZI methodology has garnered international recognition since its launch in 2018, and it provides a common language for companies aiming to transparently communicate their climate initiatives. Arkema’s commitment to sustainability is integral to its corporate strategy, reflecting a broader industry trend toward environmental responsibility.

In conclusion, Arkema's collaboration with Carbone 4 exemplifies a proactive approach to addressing climate change through innovative solutions that not only aim to reduce emissions but also empower customers to enhance their environmental impact. As the global emphasis on sustainability intensifies, such initiatives are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping a low-carbon future for industry players worldwide.
