Queensland Father Faces Third Cancer Diagnosis Amid Business Struggles

In a heartbreaking saga that underscores the fragility of life, Justin Adams, a 41-year-old father of three from Yeppoon, Queensland, has been diagnosed with colon cancer for the third time in four years. Originally diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in September 2021, Adams had recently been enjoying a promising recovery and running a microbrewery, a dream he had pursued fervently. However, in December 2023, during what was supposed to be a routine check-up, he received the devastating news that his cancer had returned, this time at stage four.
According to Tanya Adams, a physician and Justin's wife, the couple had just completed the setup of their microbrewery when Justin first showed symptoms, which they initially attributed to less serious conditions. "We had secured a venue and were about to open the microbrewery when he got his diagnosis," Tanya recounted. "He had some bleeding that seemed mild at first, but it escalated, prompting us to seek immediate medical attention."
The diagnosis came as a shock, particularly as Justin had no family history of cancer and had been otherwise healthy. Following his first diagnosis, surgery was performed to remove the tumor along with a section of his large intestine. "The cancer was removed successfully, and he underwent six months of chemotherapy as a precaution," Tanya explained. Justin's determination saw him open the brewery shortly after completing his treatment, buoyed by community support.
Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. The second diagnosis came in December 2023, revealing that the cancer had metastasized to his lymph nodes, presenting a grim prognosis. Tanya described this as a particularly difficult time for their family, especially during the festive season when they were expecting to celebrate.
"It was devastating to receive this news again, especially with the business thriving. He was completely asymptomatic, which made it even harder to process," Tanya remarked. In January 2024, Justin began intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy, enduring significant physical and emotional tolls. Despite the challenges, he once again defied the odds, with scans showing miraculous results a few months later, suggesting that the cancer had been beaten.
As of early 2025, however, the cancer has returned for a third time, with Justin currently undergoing an intensive chemotherapy regimen every two weeks. Tanya now finds herself as the primary breadwinner for the family, managing both her job and the responsibilities of caring for their children while supporting her husband through this harrowing experience.
In a statement, Tanya urged others to take their health seriously, irrespective of age or fitness levels. "If you think something is wrong with your body, even if you're young, fit, and healthy, go get it checked out. We did, and it saved his life at that time," she warned.
Justin’s story is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the resilience of the human spirit. With cancer affecting one in two Australians at some point in their lives, the Adams family's battle highlights the importance of community support and early intervention. As they navigate this challenging chapter, Tanya expresses hope and determination, emphasizing Justin's perspective on life: "He's always been the kind of person who says life's too short, and we shouldn't be wasting a day. Now more than ever, he stresses we shouldn't waste time."
