Global Center on Adaptation Strengthens Leadership Team with New Appointments

Rotterdam, July 1, 2025 — The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) has announced four key senior appointments aimed at reinforcing its leadership as it scales its global adaptation agenda. This strategic move comes at a time when the urgency for climate adaptation initiatives is more critical than ever. The new leaders, welcomed by His Excellency Macky Sall, Chair of GCA’s Supervisory Board, and Professor Patrick V. Verkooijen, GCA President and CEO, will enhance the organization's capacity to address climate challenges effectively.
The appointed individuals are: Matthew McKinnon, Vice President for External Affairs and Policy; Edward Mharadzira, Vice President of Finance and Operations; Dr. Purvi Mehta, Senior Advisor for Partnerships; and Kristina Tanso, Development Director. Each brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their respective roles, underscoring GCA's commitment to advancing its mission.
According to H.E. Macky Sall, "These appointments reflect GCA’s growing role on the world stage. I warmly welcome this strengthened leadership team, which brings the experience, diversity, and vision needed to accelerate adaptation efforts where they are needed most." Professor Verkooijen added, "As we scale our impact and deepen partnerships, this expanded leadership will bring vital expertise to advance GCA’s mission."
Matthew McKinnon, hailing from New Zealand, brings over two decades of international experience, including significant roles at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNICEF. He served as an advisor to the seventh UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and played a crucial role in advocating for climate initiatives, such as the 1.5°C goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement. His wealth of knowledge in climate negotiations will be pivotal in guiding GCA's policy and advocacy strategies.
Edward Mharadzira of Zimbabwe has an extensive background in financial management, with over 18 years of experience in global development organizations. His previous role as Senior Director of Finance and Operations at GCA has equipped him with a strong foundation for overseeing the organization's financial strategy and compliance. His leadership will be essential as GCA continues to strengthen its financial governance.
Dr. Purvi Mehta, an expert in climate adaptation and development partnerships from India, joins GCA after 27 years of experience across Asia and Africa. Her previous roles at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and CGIAR have positioned her well to guide the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program into its second phase, reinforcing GCA’s commitment to adaptive strategies in vulnerable regions.
Kristina Tanso from the United Kingdom comes from the University of Oxford, where she was Senior Development Advisor for Pediatrics and Rare Diseases. With over 12 years of experience in strategic development roles for various organizations, her expertise will be crucial in institutional fundraising and ensuring sustainable growth for GCA.
The urgency for global adaptation initiatives has been highlighted by various reports, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, which emphasizes the need for immediate action to address the impacts of climate change. With these new appointments, GCA aims to enhance its leadership and effectiveness in driving forward the global adaptation agenda.
As the impact of climate change continues to escalate, the GCA’s expanded leadership team is strategically positioned to leverage partnerships and drive innovation in adaptation solutions worldwide. The organization aims to increase awareness and financial support for adaptation initiatives, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the necessary resources to cope with the changing climate.
The implications of these appointments extend beyond organizational structure; they signify GCA's commitment to addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time. As global temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, the need for effective adaptation strategies has never been more critical. The GCA, through its strengthened leadership, is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the global response to climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
