Tunde Adebimpe Reflects on David Bowie and TV on the Radio's Legacy

In a recent interview with The Irish Times, Tunde Adebimpe, the frontman of the acclaimed indie band TV on the Radio, shared his thoughts on the late music icon David Bowie, his own artistic journey, and the band's upcoming performance at the Beyond the Pale festival. Adebimpe described Bowie as 'the coolest,' recalling how the legendary artist dressed casually in a 'normcore outfit' during their initial meeting, allowing him to blend into New York City unnoticed. This meeting took place when Bowie collaborated with the band on their critically lauded song 'Province' from the album *Return to Cookie Mountain* (2006).
Adebimpe reminisced about their first encounter, saying, 'I still don’t believe David Bowie’s here... Oh, we’re just hanging with our cool uncle.' His admiration for Bowie’s talent and graciousness is evident as he recalls the moment Bowie entered the recording booth to add his harmonies. 'Wow. David Bowie is here, singing on our record,' he exclaimed, highlighting the profound impact Bowie had on their music and the band's trajectory.
With a career spanning over two decades, TV on the Radio emerged as pioneers of the Brooklyn indie scene in the mid-2000s, blending diverse musical influences. Adebimpe, now 50, expressed gratitude for the band's longevity, stating, 'I feel really lucky that we’ve been able to do it for so long,' while reflecting on how their sound has evolved over the years.
The band, which had taken a hiatus following extensive touring and the personal loss of Adebimpe's sister, is set to perform in Ireland for the first time in 17 years at the Beyond the Pale festival on June 15, 2025. Adebimpe noted that stepping away from music allowed him to rediscover his passion and purpose. He shared, 'It’s good to take a break so you realize what it is that you love about something.' During this downtime, he released his debut solo album, *Thee Black Boltz*, in April 2025, which showcases a range of musical styles from rock to electronica.
The evolution of Adebimpe's artistic expression is not limited to music. He has also ventured into acting, with recent roles in the *Star Wars: Skeleton Crew* series and Lee Isaac Chung’s film *Twisters*. Despite his busy schedule, Adebimpe remains committed to his role in TV on the Radio, emphasizing that the band feels revitalized and ready to continue their musical journey.
As TV on the Radio prepares for their performance at Beyond the Pale, they bring a legacy of innovation and creativity. Adebimpe's reflections on Bowie and his own career articulate a profound appreciation for music as a transformative force, promising an exciting future for both him and the band.
