Bohol Allocates Financial Aid to Hog Farmers Impacted by ASF

Cebu City, Philippines – In a proactive response to the ongoing challenges posed by the African Swine Fever (ASF), the provincial government of Bohol has initiated a financial assistance program aimed at supporting local hog raisers. On June 9, 2025, Governor Aris Aumentado presided over the distribution of PHP 4.3 million in cash assistance to 357 farmers across eight municipalities affected by the ASF outbreak.
This financial aid is part of a comprehensive indemnification strategy orchestrated by the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV). Governor Aumentado emphasized the importance of this support in helping farmers rebuild their livelihoods, stating, "What we want to happen is to prevent ASF from affecting the province. Let’s help prevent the spread of ASF. This is a very serious issue." His remarks underscore the critical nature of ASF, which has already impacted a significant portion of the hog-raising community in the region.
The ASF outbreak has had varying effects across Bohol, with only 15 out of 48 towns reporting cases. According to recent data from the OPV, 41 barangays (the smallest administrative division in the Philippines) have active ASF cases, while 119 barangays have remained unaffected for at least 30 days. This indicates a level of control over the virus, attributed to the concerted efforts of local government units (LGUs) and the OPV.
In light of these developments, Governor Aumentado praised the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in managing the outbreak. He stated, "Even if the virus was able to enter our province, I am proud that because of our determination and the hardworking people of OPV and our LGUs, we were able to control the spread of ASF. It did not cause significant damage."
Experts have echoed the governor's sentiments, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to prevent further spread. Dr. Maria Lopez, an epidemiologist at the University of the Philippines, noted, "The financial support is crucial, but it must be coupled with ongoing public health measures and community engagement to ensure the disease does not resurge."
Moreover, the provincial government is appealing for public cooperation in combating ASF. Governor Aumentado expressed hope for the development of an effective vaccine, stating, "I hope you can feel our seriousness in fighting ASF. We have to pray that a vaccine will be available soon."
The implications of ASF extend beyond immediate financial concerns; they encompass broader economic and social ramifications. The hog industry is a significant contributor to the local economy, and sustained outbreaks could jeopardize food security and livelihoods. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), ASF poses a serious threat to the global pig industry, with the potential to disrupt supply chains and increase pork prices.
In conclusion, while the financial assistance provided by the Bohol provincial government represents a critical step in supporting affected farmers, the situation requires ongoing attention and adaptive strategies to mitigate the risks associated with ASF. As the province continues to navigate this public health challenge, the collaborative efforts of government, agricultural experts, and the community will be essential in ensuring the resilience of Bohol’s hog-raising industry.
