Philippines Faces Rainy Independence Day Due to Low Pressure Area

MANILA – On June 12, 2025, the Philippines will observe a rainy Independence Day due to the influence of the southwest monsoon, locally known as 'habagat,' and a low pressure area (LPA) located 235 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has indicated that this LPA has a significant probability of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, prompting warnings across the nation.

In its early morning bulletin, PAGASA forecaster Grace Castañeda stated, "Most areas in the country will be rainy due to cloud clusters caused by the southwest monsoon. Those going outdoors, especially participants in Independence Day activities, should carry protection against rains and be cautious of potential flooding and landslides." The forecast predicts scattered rains and thunderstorms particularly affecting Batanes and Cagayan.

Regions such as Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro are expected to experience persistent monsoon rains. Meanwhile, areas including Metro Manila, La Union, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Palawan, and Antique will see occasional rainfall. The remaining parts of Luzon, as well as the Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte, are likely to experience scattered thunderstorms. In Mindanao, isolated rain showers are anticipated due to localized thunderstorms.

The weather conditions are compounded by moderate to strong winds expected in the northern and western sections of Luzon, leading to moderate to rough coastal waters. In contrast, other areas will experience light to moderate winds with slight to moderate sea conditions.

While the current weather system poses challenges for Independence Day celebrations, it is essential to prioritize safety and preparedness. Castañeda further clarified that Tropical Storm Wutip, which is currently located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, is moving away and does not present any direct threat to the country.

As the nation prepares to celebrate its independence, government agencies are urged to remain vigilant and responsive to the evolving weather situation. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already indicated ongoing support for communities affected by the southwest monsoon, ensuring that aid continues amidst adverse weather conditions.

In summary, the Philippine Independence Day this year will be marked by significant rainfall and weather-related advisories, underscoring the need for public safety measures in light of the impending tropical cyclone and the pervasive effects of the southwest monsoon.
