Philippines Pursues UN Security Council Seat Amid Independence Day Celebrations

NEW YORK — During a diplomatic reception held on June 12, 2025, at the Philippine Center, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo articulated the Philippines' commitment to multilateralism and global peace as the nation seeks a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term. The event, which celebrated the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence, gathered over 300 diplomats and dignitaries, emphasizing the Philippines' historical role as Asia's first republic and its dedication to fostering equality among nations.
Manalo underscored the significant experience that the Philippines brings to the UNSC, stating, "The Philippines will bring to the Security Council 80 years of multilateral experience, a tradition of principled diplomacy, and a readiness to listen, engage, and lead with purpose." He pledged that, if elected, the Philippines would uphold the principles enshrined in the UN Charter with sincerity and resolve, highlighting the country's track record as a reliable partner and peacemaker in the global arena.
At the reception, Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, the Philippines' Permanent Representative to the UN, reiterated the ongoing campaign for the UNSC seat, noting the country’s commitment to addressing global challenges. Lagdameo stated, "This is a day of great pride for all Filipinos, wherever we may be. It reminds us to value the freedoms we enjoy today and to celebrate our rich culture and identity."
In a video message presented at the event, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the Philippines' continuous efforts to foster understanding, healing, and rebuilding globally. He urged the international community to support the nation’s bid in the upcoming elections scheduled for June 2026, stating, "You can count on the Philippines to be the same tried and tested partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in the Council."
The Philippines is vying for representation within the Asia-Pacific Group in the Security Council elections set for 2026. Historically, the Philippines last served on the UNSC from 2004 to 2005. The Security Council, composed of 15 members—five permanent and ten elected—holds the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the UN Charter. This upcoming bid highlights the Philippines' strategic diplomatic efforts and its aspirations for enhanced global influence and responsibility in international governance.
As the elections approach, the Philippines aims to consolidate support from fellow member states, emphasizing its readiness to participate actively in discussions and resolutions pertaining to international peace and security. The commitment to multilateralism remains a cornerstone of the Philippines' foreign policy, reflecting a broader strategy to engage collaboratively with the global community and address pressing global issues.
