Chance to Shine Sets New World Record for Largest Cricket Lesson

LONDON — On Monday, Chance to Shine, a charity dedicated to promoting cricket among children, set a new Guinness World Record by hosting the largest cricket lesson ever conducted. The event, held at Lord's Cricket Ground in St John’s Wood, London, saw participation from 943 young cricket enthusiasts, surpassing the previous record of 645 set in Birmingham in 2022.

This milestone marks a significant achievement for Chance to Shine, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Since its inception, the charity has reached over seven million children across the UK, primarily focusing on engaging youth in state schools located in disadvantaged areas. According to Kate Stephens, Chief Executive of Chance to Shine, the initiative not only encourages cricket participation but also fosters personal development and teamwork among children. "Playing cricket helps children think about their other abilities and what else they can do. It’s the ultimate team sport, but the individual in the team matters so much," Stephens stated.

The event attracted children from 35 schools nationwide, who gathered to participate in a cricket lesson designed to enhance skills, confidence, and social interaction. The official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Glenn Pollard, was present to certify the record-breaking occasion. "This event is not just about setting records; it’s about the joy of playing cricket and the skills that children develop in the process," Pollard commented.

Celebrity support came from notable figures such as Fury, a former contestant from the BBC's Gladiators, who emphasized the positive impact such events have on children, particularly those who may be shy or less socially active. "It’s a great way to meet new people, work together, and learn new skills. I think that’s really cool and just to have a fun day out," she said.

Teachers also expressed their enthusiasm regarding the event. Rob Ellington, a teacher at James Elliman Academy in Slough, described it as "the most important day of the year for these kids. It’s an opportunity they would never have had, and it significantly boosts their confidence and social skills."
