In a heartfelt visit to Le Rondin School in Guernsey, Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes praised the institution for its exemplary commitment to inspiring and supporting students with additional educational needs. The visit, which took place during the school's 20th anniversary celebrations, was organized by the local charity Only Fools and Donkeys, a long-time benefactor that has raised over £200,000 for the school since its inception.
Dame Kelly, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, expressed her admiration for the commitment shown by the school's staff, likening their dedication to that of her own physical education teacher who played a pivotal role in her athletic journey. "I as lucky that I had an amazing PE teacher who really looked after me and pushed me into sport," shared Holmes, reflecting on her formative years and the importance of mentorship in realizing one's potential.
During her visit, the former athlete attended a school assembly and toured the facilities, engaging with students and staff alike. "It was wonderful to have them all together and to see what a very special place this school is for everybody," she stated, emphasizing the energy and engagement present at Le Rondin. Holmes commended the teachers for their hard work, noting, "You can’t underestimate the engagement and energy that’s here - the teachers are doing a fantastic job and don’t get enough credit."
Holmes highlighted the significance of tailored support for students with diverse learning needs, stating, "Everyone learns differently and has different needs. What’s important is to be given opportunity and support." This sentiment underscores the essential role that educational institutions like Le Rondin play in fostering inclusive environments where every child can thrive.
In addition to her school visit, Dame Kelly participated in a weekly parkrun event, further showcasing her ongoing commitment to promoting physical activity and mental health in the community. She acknowledged the athletic prowess of Guernsey's residents, referencing local Olympians such as Cameron Chalmers, Carl Hester, and Heather Watson. "This does seem like a very sporty place. And guiding young people in that direction is so good for their mental and physical health," she remarked, recognizing the broader impact of sports on youth development.
The visit by Dame Kelly Holmes not only highlights the achievements of Le Rondin School but also serves as a reminder of the vital role that supportive educational environments play in the lives of children with additional needs. As the school looks to the future, it is poised to continue its mission of providing opportunities and support for all its students, guided by the inspiration of figures like Holmes, who exemplify the power of encouragement and mentorship in achieving one’s dreams.
