Honda HRC Dominates First Day of Testing for Suzuka 8 Hours 2025

On June 19, 2025, Honda HRC showcased its prowess during the first official test session for the highly anticipated 46th edition of the Coca-Cola Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race, held at the esteemed Suzuka Circuit in Japan. This test is a critical precursor to the 2025 FIM Endurance World Championship, where 46 teams prepared to compete in a race renowned for its intensity and global recognition.

Honda HRC, aiming for a fourth consecutive victory in this prestigious event, announced its rider lineup of Takumi Takahashi and Johann Zarco, with Iker Lecuona participating in the test. The team was divided into Group A and Group B, with Honda HRC assigned to Group B. The test encompassed four sessions: a 45-minute morning session, a 45-minute afternoon session, a 75-minute extended session, and a 70-minute night session commencing at 18:40. Under race-like conditions, the team completed a total of three tests, including two private sessions prior to this public test.

The team’s strategy was to adapt to the upgraded suspension components introduced this year, which significantly affect rider feel. Takumi Takahashi, a veteran of the Suzuka 8 Hours, emphasized the importance of setup adaptation during the testing phase. By the end of Session 3, Honda HRC achieved the fastest overall time with a lap of 2:06.022, demonstrating their competitive edge. Takahashi recorded a best lap of 2:06.233, securing second place overall in the session, while Lecuona clocked a 2:07.801 lap, placing fifth.

Teruaki Matsubara, Team Manager of Honda HRC, highlighted the importance of these test sessions in refining their machine setup. He stated, “The key difference from last year’s machine is the change in suspension manufacturer. This has a significant impact on rider feel, so we’re prioritizing setup adaptation in our testing.” This thorough approach underscores Honda HRC's commitment to excellence in their preparation for the upcoming race.

In a reflection on his experience, Iker Lecuona remarked, “The feeling of winning the Suzuka 8 Hours is still vivid in my memory. Last year, I couldn’t participate due to a scheduling conflict with the World Superbike Championship (WSBK), which was disappointing.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the test, acknowledging the adjustments needed for the bike setup tailored to Takahashi.

Takahashi also shared his insights regarding the testing conditions, noting that the track temperature was nearly 20°C higher than previous sessions, which posed challenges in understanding the setup changes. “The setup we wanted to test felt very different due to the temperature shift, which was confusing. But since these conditions are close to race day, we’re doing what we can within the limits,” he stated. This adaptability is crucial as the team prepares for the race day, where every second counts.

The Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race will take place from August 1 to 3, 2025, marking an important event in the motorsport calendar. With Honda HRC’s promising performance in the initial testing phase, the racing community eagerly anticipates how the team will leverage this experience in their pursuit of victory.

As the countdown to the race continues, Honda HRC remains focused on refining their strategy and machine performance, highlighting the intense competitive spirit that characterizes the Suzuka 8 Hours and the FIM Endurance World Championship. With expert riders and a dedicated team, Honda HRC is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming race, striving for yet another remarkable achievement in their storied history of endurance racing.
