Lachlan Morton Embraces Adventure at Kenya's Migration Gravel Race

Lachlan Morton, a prominent Australian cyclist, embarks on a thrilling journey at the Migration Gravel Race in Kenya, an event he describes as one of his favorite experiences in the world of cycling. The four-day race, covering 650 kilometers across the breathtaking Maasai Mara, is not only a test of endurance but also an opportunity for cultural exchange and environmental appreciation. Morton, who has participated in this event multiple times, emphasizes the unique blend of wildlife and rugged terrain, stating, "You have giraffes on the course and see elephants – make believe stuff. If you are too hyper fixated on the racing element, you could miss a lot of that. And I don't want to miss any of that."

The Migration Gravel Race, scheduled for June 16, 2025, offers a challenging course that traverses the vast Kenyan savannah, where participants often encounter local wildlife such as wildebeests and zebras. Morton reflects on the variability of the race conditions, noting, "Each day throws something at you, for sure. The riding is varied in the Maasai Mara. It can be hot, dusty, and rough, but also, when you gain just a little bit of elevation, it can get pretty lush."

Morton has forged strong relationships with local athletes, particularly through his collaboration with the Amani Project, an initiative dedicated to providing East African cyclists with the opportunity to compete professionally. "The folks at Amani are just a great group of people. That is the most important thing to me," Morton explains. He believes that Kenyan athletes, known for their prowess in long-distance running, have the potential to excel in cycling as well.

The vibrant culture and warm hospitality of Kenya have left a lasting impression on Morton. He plans to explore Nairobi, the capital city, for the first time, seeking to immerse himself in the local culinary scene. "The food in Kenya is amazing. I eat lots of ugali, and chapati is probably my favorite, the flatbread. Then there are amazing stews. It is all fresh, simple, but super flavorful," he shares.

Morton's journey in cycling has been marked by unconventional adventures, including a 1,064-kilometer ride from Munich to the Polish-Ukrainian border to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees. His dedication to the sport, coupled with a commitment to social causes, defines his career trajectory. As he prepares for the Migration Gravel Race, Morton remains optimistic about the future of cycling in Kenya and the potential for greater recognition of local talents.

As Morton gears up for the race, he is not only focusing on competition but also cherishing the memories and friendships formed along the way.
