The 21-year-old Briton, who plays collegiate tennis for the University of San Diego, had just completed a demanding schedule in California, participating in back-to-back ITF World Tennis Tour events. It was during this time that Ryan Keckley, his head coach at the University of San Diego, received news from Mark Hilton, a national coach for the Lawn Tennis Association, indicating that Tarvet was being considered for a qualifying wild card at Wimbledon.

“After the semifinals, I informed him about the potential opportunity, and we quickly arranged for him to travel to London,” Keckley told ATP Tour. Tarvet’s journey involved crossing eight time zones and transitioning from hard courts to grass in preparation for one of tennis's most prestigious competitions. “He had merely six days to adapt before facing one of the biggest moments of his life,” Keckley added.

Despite his inexperience at this level—having never faced an opponent ranked higher than World No. 367—Tarvet has excelled in his qualifying matches, losing only one of the eleven sets he has played. His trajectory mirrors that of Marcus Willis, who in 2016 made headlines by reaching the second round of Wimbledon as a low-ranked player.

Keckley, who has coached Tarvet for three years, emphasized Tarvet's exceptional work ethic. “He prioritizes tennis above all else and consistently puts in the effort,” Keckley remarked. “His commitment to practice and improvement has made him a standout player.” Tarvet’s diligence has also earned him multiple qualifications for the ATP Next Gen Accelerator program, which aims to enhance the development of top collegiate players by granting them entry into ATP Challenger Tour events.

As he prepares for the match against Alcaraz, Tarvet’s confidence is at an all-time high, according to Keckley. The coach noted, “He has a high tennis IQ and is comfortable in high-pressure situations.” This match will present challenges due to the significant experience gap between Tarvet and Alcaraz, a five-time major champion. However, Keckley is optimistic about Tarvet's abilities, stating, “We need to focus on our game plan and what makes Ollie unique. He has risen to every challenge presented to him.”
