Biotropics Malaysia Investigates Tongkat Ali for Menopause Relief

Biotropics Malaysia, a prominent player in herbal supplements, has recently concluded a clinical trial investigating the potential of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) in alleviating menopausal symptoms among women. This study, which involved 150 participants aged 40 to 55, explored the effects of varying dosages of Tongkat Ali—50mg and 100mg—over a 12-week period. The results are currently pending publication in a scientific journal.

Historically recognized mainly as an aphrodisiac for men, this botanical is now being examined for its benefits in women's health, particularly during perimenopausal and postmenopausal stages. According to Dr. Annie George, Head of Science at Biotropics Malaysia, preliminary findings from the trial indicate significant improvements in quality of life, sleep quality, sexual function, and pain management among participants who received Tongkat Ali.

Dr. George noted that previous research has hinted at the mood-enhancing properties of Tongkat Ali, suggesting its potential to mitigate stress and improve overall well-being in menopausal women. "What I’ve noticed is that for some of the popular ingredients used for relieving menopause symptoms, they are using a dosage of 500mg to 1,000mg per day, whereas we were able to see similar results for Tongkat Ali at doses between 50mg and 100mg," she explained. This dosage efficiency positions Tongkat Ali as a promising alternative to existing treatments, which often involve higher dosages with the risk of side effects.

The clinical trial was structured as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, with participants divided into three groups. The outcomes were rigorously measured through self-reported questionnaires assessing mood, energy levels, and various menopausal symptoms. Notably, the study reported no drastic hormonal fluctuations in participants, suggesting that Tongkat Ali may help maintain hormonal balance without significant alterations to estrogen and testosterone levels.

Biotropics has a history of investigating the health benefits of Tongkat Ali. A previous study conducted in 2013 indicated that individuals taking 200mg of the extract daily experienced notable reductions in tension, anger, and confusion compared to those on placebos. Further research published in 2018 demonstrated significant improvements in energy levels and emotional health among moderately stressed participants taking Tongkat Ali. Additionally, a study from Japan indicated that daily supplementation could enhance immune responses in middle-aged adults by increasing T cell counts.

As Biotropics prepares to launch its own product, Nu-prep Wanita, designed to enhance energy and immunity in women, the company has also entered new markets. Recently, they signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese distributor ASK Intercity for the sale and distribution of their proprietary Tongkat Ali extract, Physta, in Japan—a market characterized by an aging population and discerning consumers.

Fahmi Mokhtar, Head of Performance Ingredients at Biotropics Malaysia, emphasized the significance of the Japanese market, stating that “Physta fits that purpose perfectly, as we have conducted various clinical studies to prove its safety and efficacy.” This strategic move underscores the company's commitment to expanding the benefits of Tongkat Ali to a broader audience.

Looking ahead, there are plans to further investigate the effects of Tongkat Ali on mental energy and concentration among younger adults. As awareness of the potential health benefits of botanicals grows, Biotropics Malaysia is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing research and product development in women's health.
