This phenomenon is attributed to the high voltage maintained when a phone is kept at full charge, which accelerates chemical aging within the battery, as explained by Dibakar Datta, Associate Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Research indicates that charging a smartphone battery to 100% consistently could lead to a 10% to 15% faster degradation over its lifetime compared to stopping at 90%. While this might not represent a significant impact, it's a factor for users aiming to maximize their device's lifespan. Notwithstanding, the modern smartphone battery is noted for its durability, often outlasting the device's other components. “Most users will likely upgrade their phone for reasons such as a broken screen or outdated camera quality before battery issues arise,” Wang remarked, highlighting the resilience of current battery technology.

For everyday use, experts like Wang recommend charging the phone to 85% or 90% to help extend the battery's lifespan. Additionally, allowing the battery to frequently drain to 0% should be avoided; instead, users are advised to start recharging around the 20% mark to prevent impairing the battery's capacity to hold a charge. Extreme temperatures, either high or low, are identified as more detrimental to battery health than charging practices, with Wang emphasizing the importance of avoiding such conditions.

When it comes to charging speed, Datta advises against rapid charging, noting that the heat generated can further degrade the battery. For users concerned about their battery's health, most smartphones offer settings to monitor it, or alternatively, professional advice can be sought at stores like Apple or Samsung. If battery health falls below 80%, considering a replacement is suggested.
