Thailand to Experience Longest Day of the Year on June 21, 2025

On June 21, 2025, Thailand will witness the longest day of the year, a phenomenon attributed to the summer solstice, according to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT). This annual event occurs as the sun reaches its northernmost point in its apparent path across the sky, thus prolonging daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere.
The summer solstice, which takes place each year around June 21, is characterized by the longest duration of sunlight and the shortest night. During this time, the sun rises from the northeastern horizon, peaking at around 5:51 AM, and will set at approximately 6:47 PM, providing nearly 12 hours and 56 minutes of daylight in Bangkok, as noted by NARIT officials.
Dr. Anuchit Phongthavorn, a senior researcher at NARIT, explained, "The tilt of the Earth’s axis, which is about 23.5 degrees, causes varying solar energy distribution across the planet, leading to the seasonal changes we observe. As a result, summer days are significantly longer than winter days."
The summer solstice not only marks a climatic shift but also heralds the onset of summer in various countries across the Northern Hemisphere, including the United States, Japan, and several European nations. Conversely, countries in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Australia and Chile, will enter winter during this time.
This astronomical event holds cultural significance as well, prompting various celebrations and observances in different parts of the world. In Thailand, traditional practices may reflect the importance of harnessing the sun's energy, particularly in agriculture and local festivals.
NARIT further elaborated that the summer solstice is part of a larger cycle of solar-related events. Following this solstice, the next major occurrence will be the autumnal equinox on September 23, 2025, when day and night will be of equal length, marking the transition into autumn for the Northern Hemisphere and spring for the Southern Hemisphere.
In conclusion, the longest day of the year serves as a reminder of the Earth's axial tilt and its profound impact on seasonal changes. As Thailand prepares for this astronomical event, it invites reflection on the interplay between nature and cultural practices, underscoring the significance of celestial phenomena in everyday life. With more than 12 hours of daylight, the solstice presents an opportunity for outdoor activities and community engagement, enriching the cultural fabric of the nation.
