German Backpacker Rescued After 11 Days Lost in Australian Outback

In a remarkable survival story, Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old backpacker from Germany, was rescued after spending 11 harrowing nights lost in the remote outback of Western Australia. Authorities reported that Wilga survived the ordeal by drinking rainwater and puddles, while finding shelter in a cave. She was found in a disoriented state approximately 24 kilometers from her abandoned van, which had become stuck in dense bushland.

Wilga’s journey into the outback began on June 29, when she was last seen at a general store in Beacon, Western Australia. According to acting police inspector Jessica Securo, Wilga lost control of her vehicle, which subsequently became bogged down, leaving her stranded. "She spent 11 nights exposed to the elements, consuming minimal food supplies and relying on rain and puddles for hydration," Securo explained in a press conference on July 10, 2023.

The rescue operation was initiated after Wilga was spotted by a passerby, Tania Henley, who noticed her waving frantically by the roadside. Henley described Wilga's condition as fragile, noting that she was barefoot and had wrapped her injured foot. "Everything in this bush is very prickly. I just can’t believe that she survived," Henley remarked to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reporters after the incident.

Following her rescue, Wilga was airlifted to a hospital in Perth, where she received treatment for exhaustion, dehydration, extensive insect bites, and a foot injury. As of now, she is recuperating and taking her recovery one day at a time. Her family expressed immense relief and gratitude for her safe return.
