German Backpacker Carolina Wilga Rescued After 11 Days in Australian Outback

In a remarkable survival story, Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old backpacker from Germany, was rescued after spending 11 nights lost in the harsh conditions of the Australian outback. Wilga was found on Friday, July 9, 2023, by a passing driver, Tania Henley, who noticed her waving for help on the roadside in a disoriented state. According to Western Australia Police, Wilga had become lost after her van became stuck in remote bushland near Beacon, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Perth.

Wilga's ordeal began when she was last seen on June 29, 2023, at a general store in Beacon. Her van was discovered abandoned shortly before her rescue, leading investigators to conclude that she had lost control of the vehicle due to mechanical issues, causing it to become bogged down in the bush. Police reported that she had traveled approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) on foot, navigating through difficult terrain while suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and numerous insect bites.

"She spent 11 nights exposed to the elements and survived by consuming minimal food supplies and drinking water from rain and puddles," stated Acting Inspector Jessica Securo of the Western Australia Police during a press conference. Wilga's survival was attributed to sheer luck, as her eventual discovery was a fortunate coincidence, underscoring the unpredictable dangers of the outback.

Henley, who found Wilga, described her as being in a fragile state, barefoot and with an injured foot wrapped in makeshift bandages. "Everything in this bush is very prickly. I just can’t believe that she survived," Henley recounted to ABC, highlighting the formidable challenges posed by the environment.

Wilga has since been airlifted to a hospital in Perth, where she is recovering and taking her recovery one day at a time. "She had a good night’s sleep in the hospital," added Securo, reflecting on the importance of the swift response that led to her rescue.
