Remembering PJ John Gavin: A Life of Service and Community Impact

PJ (John) Gavin, a respected member of the Belcarra community, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the Galway Clinic after a brief illness. Surrounded by his family, Gavin's passing marks a significant loss for those who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Margaret Gavin, and his infant sister, Catherine.

Born and raised in Leitir, Islandeady, Gavin was a beloved husband to Eileen (née O'Donnell) and a devoted father to his daughters, Zara and Jenny, and son, James. He was also a proud grandfather to Senan and Leo. Gavin's family and friends have expressed their heartfelt condolences, reflecting on the profound impact he had on their lives.

The community will gather to honor Gavin at the Belcarra Community Centre on June 20, 2025, from 4 PM, followed by a removal to his residence at 6:30 PM. The funeral cortege will then proceed to St. Anne’s Church, Belcarra, for Requiem Mass at 11 AM on June 21, 2025, after which he will be laid to rest in Guesdian Cemetery, Belcarra. The family has requested that the house remain private and that flowers be omitted, with donations instead directed to the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association.

Gavin was well-known in the community for his kindness and dedication. His long-standing role as a bus driver with Bus Éireann allowed him to connect with many residents, earning a reputation as a gentleman who always had a friendly word for passengers. "He was a genuinely decent gentleman and work colleague," said a former bus driver, reflecting the sentiments shared by many in the community.

In addition to his immediate family, Gavin is survived by his siblings, including Noreen Staunton, Eileen Corcoran, Mary Hanbury, Teresa Garrivan, Anne Gallagher, Pauline Sloan, Margaret Holland, Joan Kenny, James Gavin, and Martin Gavin, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

As the community mourns his loss, tributes continue to pour in, showcasing the legacy Gavin leaves behind. Many have shared stories of his kindness, patience, and the countless lives he touched throughout his lifetime. His passing not only affects his family but also leaves a void in the hearts of neighbors and friends who knew him as a pillar of strength and kindness.

PJ Gavin’s contribution to the community extends beyond his professional role; he was a friend, mentor, and supporter to many. His family, friends, and community members will remember him fondly, honoring his memory by continuing to promote the values he exemplified throughout his life. May he rest in peace.
