Susan Sarandon to Make UK Theatre Debut in Tracy Letts' 'Mary Page Marlowe'

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon is set to make her UK theatrical debut this autumn, joining Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough in the acclaimed play 'Mary Page Marlowe' by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts. The production will be staged at the prestigious Old Vic Theatre in London from September 23 to November 1, 2025, during the final season of Artistic Director Matthew Warchus.

'Mary Page Marlowe' is a unique narrative that explores the life of an accountant and mother of two through a non-linear storytelling format, described by Letts as a 'time-jumping mosaic.' The play spans over 70 years, allowing multiple actors to portray the titular role at various ages. This format presents a complex yet intimate portrait of the character, inviting audiences to experience the multifaceted nature of identity and memory.

Sarandon, who made her Broadway debut in 1972, expressed her excitement and apprehension about returning to the stage, stating, 'I’m so honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus’s final season at the Old Vic. I am terrified but excited.' Her extensive career includes a notable Academy Award win for her role in 'Dead Man Walking' and recognition for performances in films such as 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and 'Blackbird.'

Riseborough, known for her film work, including recent performances in 'Matilda the Musical,' also expressed her enthusiasm about the project, saying, 'It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts’ poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon.' Riseborough's last stage appearance was in 2008, making this role particularly significant for her.

Matthew Warchus, the director and a prominent figure in the theatre community, praised Letts as 'one of America’s greatest living writers.' He noted that this production will be staged in-the-round, a decision that aims to enhance the audience's engagement with the performance. Warchus, who is set to step down from his position next year, has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to direct such a powerful work in his final season.

The play’s UK premiere holds special significance for Letts, who remarked, 'From my first experiences as a playwright here 30 years ago, to the run of August: Osage County at the National, London is an integral part of my development as an artist. I’m deeply gratified to have Mary Page Marlowe at the Old Vic, directed by Matthew, featuring these remarkable actresses.'

The narrative style of 'Mary Page Marlowe' has garnered mixed reviews, with New York Times critic Charles Isherwood describing it as 'beautiful and affecting,' likening it to 'flipping through a friend’s photo album.' This sentiment resonates with the essence of the play, which aims to illuminate the fragmented nature of personal history and the universal experience of searching for understanding within one’s life.

As the Old Vic Theatre prepares for this production, it stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of live theatre and the unique ability of dramatic storytelling to connect with audiences on profound levels. The collaboration between Sarandon, Riseborough, and Warchus is anticipated to create a memorable theatrical experience that honors the rich tradition of the stage while offering fresh insights into the human condition.
