Meta AI Users May Unknowingly Make Searches Public, Expert Warns

Meta AI, the artificial intelligence platform by Meta Platforms, Inc., is reportedly exposing user search queries to the public without sufficient user awareness, raising significant privacy concerns. A recent report highlights that users' prompts and the resulting outputs are shared on a public feed, potentially allowing others to access sensitive information without the user's consent.
The issue was brought to light by Imran Rahman-Jones, a technology reporter for the BBC, who noted that this situation could lead to users inadvertently revealing personal inquiries, including indecent requests or academic cheating, due to the platform's public sharing settings. According to Rachel Tobac, CEO of Social Proof Security, a cybersecurity firm in the United States, many users do not expect their interactions with AI chatbots to be publicly visible. "If a user’s expectations about how a tool functions don’t match reality, you’ve got yourself a huge user experience and security problem," Tobac stated, emphasizing the gap between user expectations and the actual functionalities of Meta AI.
Meta AI was launched earlier this year and is accessible through popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as a standalone product featuring a public "Discover" feed. Users can opt to make their searches private within their account settings; however, many are reportedly unaware of this option. A spokesperson for Meta did not provide a comment regarding the public exposure of user searches when approached for clarification.
The problem became evident when several users were found posting sensitive personal queries, such as intimate medical questions and academic test answers, on Meta AI’s public feed. For instance, users have been reported asking the platform to generate images of scantily clad characters or seeking answers for school assignments. Such behavior can easily be traced back to individual users through their usernames and profile pictures, raising concerns about privacy violations and the potential for reputational damage.
One prominent example included a user requesting Meta AI to create an animated character lying outside in minimal attire, which was linked back to their Instagram account. This capability of tracing posts back to their authors highlights the need for improved user awareness and education about privacy settings on the platform.
Experts in cybersecurity and data privacy are urging Meta to enhance transparency regarding the default settings for sharing information. As online interactions increasingly become public, the implications for user privacy are profound. Users often assume that their inquiries in an AI context are secure and confidential, similar to traditional search engines. However, the reality is different on platforms like Meta AI.
