The Financial Strain of Crohn's Disease: Patients Face Tough Choices

Patients managing Crohn's disease in Ireland are facing significant financial burdens, with an average annual cost of €3,252 for treatment and care, according to a recent report by Crohn's and Colitis Ireland. This condition, which affects approximately 40,000 individuals in the country, often forces patients to make difficult decisions between essential expenses such as utilities and necessary medical treatments.

The report highlights that 60% of individuals living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience financial difficulties due to their condition. Many have reported avoiding necessary medical care, with 47% citing cost as a barrier. Furthermore, the impact of IBD on employment is substantial; 62% of respondents indicated that time off work has negatively affected their financial situation.

Dr. Orlaith Kelly, a consultant gastroenterologist at Connolly Hospital in Dublin, emphasizes that Crohn's disease can be diagnosed at various ages, but it predominantly affects individuals between 15-35 years old, with a secondary wave of diagnoses occurring in those aged 50-60. “Given the age profile of patients, IBD can often impact people when they are ordinarily at the height of their working lives or entering work life or parenthood,” Dr. Kelly noted. The financial implications of managing this chronic condition are exacerbated by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, leading many patients to prioritize basic living expenses over medical needs.

The report also reveals that 85% of patients incur additional costs related to travel for medical appointments, with 83% struggling with parking fees and 62% facing financial strain due to overnight stays for necessary procedures. These statistics underscore the extensive financial strain associated with IBD management.

Amy Dennis, a Crohn's disease patient, shared her personal experience, stating, “It becomes a choice between paying for school uniforms, a utility bill, or forgoing medication.” Her diagnosis came after significant weight loss and persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, culminating in a colonoscopy that confirmed her condition in December 2022.

In light of these challenges, Amy Kelly, Chief Operating Officer at Crohn's & Colitis Ireland, has called on the government to improve access to care for IBD patients. She advocated for the inclusion of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in the chronic disease management program, which could offer structured care and potentially reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients. Kelly emphasized the need for equitable access to essential medical resources, stating, “This inclusion would provide free, structured care, potentially reducing patients’ out-of-pocket healthcare expenses through fewer emergency room visits and lower medication costs.”

Dr. Kelly also highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive approach to patient care, advocating for timely access to specialized medical professionals and procedures. “This requires joined-up thinking at a national program level,” she remarked, noting that such strategies could save costs while greatly improving patients' quality of life.

As the community continues to advocate for improved support and resources for those affected by Crohn's disease, the urgent need for reforms to alleviate the financial burden and enhance healthcare access remains a crucial issue. The hope is that with greater awareness and government action, individuals like Amy Dennis will no longer have to choose between vital medical care and basic living expenses.
