World Rugby Releases Progress Report on Women's Rugby Ahead of 2025 World Cup

In anticipation of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, set to commence in England on August 22, World Rugby has released its mid-year progress report concerning the 'Impact Beyond 2025' initiative. With just 50 days remaining until the tournament, the report outlines significant advancements in promoting women's rugby globally, aiming for sustained growth beyond the tournament's conclusion.
The 'Impact Beyond 2025' program is designed to elevate women's rugby at all levels, from grassroots participation to elite competition. It seeks to empower women and girls, strengthen communities, and promote gender equity within the sport. This initiative aligns with the RFU's domestic Impact '25 program and various social impact projects spearheaded by the Rugby World Cup 2025 Local Organizing Company (LOC).
According to Sally Horrox, Chief of Women’s Rugby at World Rugby, the report highlights that over 2,500 members of the women's rugby community have already benefited from the program. Furthermore, more than 300 individuals have participated in the first two women’s health webinars, and 42 Unions have received Rugby Rising Play grants. The program also includes a fundraising toolkit aimed at enhancing support for unions involved in women’s rugby.
The report emphasizes three key pillars aimed at driving growth and engagement in women’s rugby: 1. **Inspiration** - Encouraging more individuals to play, support, and develop a passion for the game. 2. **Development** - Offering targeted career and personal development initiatives to help participants thrive in their careers both within and outside rugby. 3. **Empowerment** - Providing Unions with the necessary resources and networks to foster a more inclusive future for the sport.
The second installment of the Impact Report covers the period leading up to June 2025, with the final report expected post-tournament. Horrox expressed optimism about the progress made thus far, noting, "Impact Beyond 2025 is already making a huge difference to women’s rugby across the world. The report evidences great progress, but there is even greater opportunity ahead of us."
The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is anticipated to be one of the most significant sporting events of the summer, with over 300,000 tickets already sold. The tournament not only promises to showcase elite women's rugby but also aims to create lasting change within the sport by inspiring future generations of female players and supporters. For those interested in attending, tickets are available through the official Rugby World Cup website.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhancing women's participation in sports globally, and the efforts made through 'Impact Beyond 2025' are expected to serve as a model for future programs aimed at fostering inclusivity and growth in sports worldwide.
