Israeli Forces Board Humanitarian Aid Ship Bound for Gaza

In a significant escalation in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, Israeli troops have reportedly boarded a humanitarian aid vessel, the Madleen, which was attempting to breach the naval blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip. The incident occurred shortly after the ship departed from Italy's Sicilian coast, carrying a symbolic cargo of humanitarian assistance including rice and baby formula. Notably aboard the ship is climate activist Greta Thunberg, who, along with other passengers, has raised alarms about the interception by Israeli forces. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organized the voyage, confirmed via social media that communication with the ship was lost, and released images showing activists on board with their hands raised in surrender.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the Madleen is now being escorted towards the shores of Israel, where its passengers are expected to be returned to their home countries. 'We will not be intimidated. The world is watching,' said Hay Sha Wiya, press officer for the FFC. The coalition argues that the Israeli blockade, in place since 2007, is illegal and constitutes a violation of international law. The UN's human rights chief, Volker Türk, recently highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where many Palestinians face starvation or violence when seeking food.
