India Plane Crash Claims 279 Lives, One of the Deadliest Disasters in Decades

AHMEDABAD, India — The death toll from one of the most catastrophic air disasters in recent history has risen to 279, following the crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The aircraft, which was en route to London Gatwick Airport, issued a mayday call just before it fell from the sky, igniting a massive fireball upon impact with nearby residential buildings.

As families mourn the loss of their loved ones, authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident, which has been marked by a significant recovery effort. The victims comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese travelers, and one Canadian, with casualties ranging from a prominent politician to a teenage tea vendor. In the aftermath of the disaster, distraught family members have begun providing DNA samples to assist with identification efforts, as the official death toll will not be finalized until this process is complete.

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced that forensic teams have successfully located the flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box, which is expected to provide crucial insights into the cause of the crash. Investigators are still searching for the second black box to further aid their inquiries.
